In much the same
way that "country" did not seem to be an entirely accurate
description of Rattlesnake Gunfight, "folk" does not seem completely
accurate for Ivan and Alyosha. It's not that some of the hallmarks of folk are
not there, but there are enough updates and twists that people who would
normally be put off by the genre should still check them out.
There are
definitely some rock elements, reminding me a bit of Roy Orbison. Some of this
is probably due to the inclusion of electric guitars, rather than going with
strictly acoustic. Also, there are some interesting beats and tempos. The
vocals are dominant, and there is a tilt towards social consciousness, which is
pretty fold, but it is just not all there is.
"The Rebel Jesus"
is probably the most stereotypically folk song, though it also works as a
Christmas song. It makes some good points, and has a depth to it that I value.
It also, even though it apologizes for judging, feels a bit judgmental. That
balance can be difficult to achieve, when the world's injustices have you down.
That being said,
much of their music is edifying, and they give value to various types of
relationships, including romantic. "Be Your Man" is relatable and has
a fun video, which demonstrates pretty clearly that the band does not take
themselves too seriously.
The web store is
currently undergoing maintenance, but Amazon does carry their music.
