You Jump, I
Jump's album Reckless is availably on Spotify, and that is mostly how I
listened to it. When the first track, "What Goes Up", started, I
thought "Oh no, it's a boy band."
That is not
the case. The plaintive harmonies of the song don't go on very long, and then
they do a seamless segue into "Reckless", which does some changes in
tempo and tone, so that by the end of those two tracks you have covered a fair
amount of range.
Based on
Facebook, the band is really just Dustin Phillips, though based on the Youtube
videos, and listening to the album, he does do a fair amount of collaboration.
One complaint about the Youtube channel is that there was no information on the
collaborators. So from other linked videos, I think the female may have her own
video channel, but I have no idea who the guy who raps is.
The other
thing that was interesting is that the videos are mainly covers, when it seems
like there should be enough material, with a full album, to focus on that.
Everything
is well-performed. There is an emphasis on synthesized sound. The covers come
from various artists, which indicates some openness to other types of music.
Somehow, it doesn't seem to sink in though. Everything is perfectly pleasant,
but it doesn't really seem to go anyway. That flourish should be dramatic, but
it's not really building to anything. He seems to be having a lot of fun, and
that could be enough, but I do think more is possible.
